Another week of showcasing fashion in the city that never sleeps is behind us.
From September 7th until the 14th New York was filled with designers, models, clothes, shoes, and those who live and breathe for it. Hundreds of shows took place all around the city and for those of us who weren’t lucky enough to attend and see it all in real life, we had to settle for pictures and videos.
Looking over all the photos I couldn’t help but notice a few repeated patterns when it came to bags the models carried on their shoulders and in their arms.
Bigger is better
Just a few years back the "it" bag everyone wanted was Jacquemus’ La Chiquito bag, often made fun of online for its size, it was big enough to barely fit a phone.
But as it always is in life, and subsequently fashion, nothing lasts forever and it has now been dethroned by bigger, more functional bags.
Especially prevalent in the post-pandemic world where bags and purses got flooded with masks, tissues, and hand sanitizers, consumers started to value spaciousness much more than in the years before.
Shapelesness
It is also worth mentioning that most of the bags shown this week did not have a defined shape or sharp edges. Bags who are able to stand on their own were a much rarer sight than in years prior.
Looking over popular bags from collections of brands, such as Gucci’s pre-fall 2016, it is easy to spot heavily defined bags - which was not the case this September.
The materials used are much more fluid and interesting to watch, giving dimension through the lessened use of construction.
Fabric was seen much more as the material of choice for bags, in most cases offering a high-end solution for totes.
Versatility
It makes perfect sense, more room equals more possibilities.
Whether you want to put in a spare sweater for the upcoming colder months, fresh flowers you’re bringing home from the market, or just a few pounds of lemons (why not I guess?), you can!
The multi-functional nature of big bags comes in handy in everyday life. Making the bag more practical gives it a higher chance of being loved and used more often, and the customers their money’s worth.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this! I didn’t want to ramble too much and tried to keep it short.
